Hybrid VOF–Lagrangian CFD Modeling of Droplet Aerobreakup

A hybrid VOF–Lagrangian method for simulating the aerodynamic breakup of liquid droplets induced by a traveling shock wave is proposed and tested. The droplet deformation fragmentation, together with subsequent mist development, are predicted using fully three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model following unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes approach. main characteristics aerobreakup process under shear-induced entrainment regime effectively reproduced employing scale-adaptive simulation turbulent flows. two-phase combines volume-of-fluid technique tracking transient gas–liquid interface on finite volume grid discrete phase smallest fragments. approach fluids engineering applications demonstrated making comparison reference experiments high-fidelity numerical simulations, achieving acceptably accurate results without being computationally expensive.
